Hoisting shaft is being renovated: The Bernburg landmark shall shine with new splendour

Already visible from afar: the 80 meter high white tower bearing the name "Bernburger Salz" and the miner's symbol, a hammer and pick, is part of Bernburg's skyline as is the tower of the castle above the river Saale. However, it has a very mundane purpose and serves to haul the salt of the esco mine Bernburg to the surface, thus being the most important connection to the expansive mine. Soon the imposing structure will disappear behind building covers.

The structure dating back to 1966 is getting long in the tooth and the façade needs extensive renovations which were last done in the summer of 1992. This time, however, the work is clearly going to last longer because in various areas the concrete façade needs reinforcing in order to be preserved. According to current planning, scaffolding on the north side has started in June, to be followed by the east side.

In order to keep the noise level as low as possible, the steel work required from the middle of July will take place behind a canvas enclosure and be limited to workdays from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Both sides should be completed by the start of winter. Then in the spring of 2018, work on the south and west façades begins, which won't be completed before autumn.

The way in which the "white tower" will greet Bernburg citizens and visitors in its new splendour has not yet been finalized. In all events the head of the town's economic department, Holger Dittrich, already has a clear opinion: "The current motto 'Bernburger Salz' with the traditional miner's symbol is an attractive calling card for the entire town. It connects the natural wealth with down-to-earth mining and modern industry – why should the tried-and-tested be changed?"
