Experts Recommend Fluoridated Salt
During the past few years, oral health could be considerably improved in many countries by introducing specific prophylactic measures. One of them was the use of fluoridated salt which had the biggest influence on the reduction of caries.
Many national and international associations and research committees in the field of oral health and nutrition recommend that all households and all age groups use fluoridated salt. A regular intake of fluoridated salt combined with a daily use of fluoridated toothpaste can reduce the risk of caries by up to 50 %.
In May 2007, experts from 30 countries met at a conference held in Genève, Switzerland, on the topic of oral health by fluoride. The conference was organized by the FDI World Dental Federation, the International Association for Dental Research and the World Health Organisation. The experts unanimously expressed their recommendation in favour of a world-wide increase in the use of fluoride e.g. in food-grade salt.
