When and how the Portuguese brand of VATEL® was created is a bit mysterious.

Most likely, the name can be attributed to a cook named Fritz Karle Watel who served the Prince de Conde in the times of the famous Sun King (le Roi Soleil), Louis XIV. However, the first known registration of the Vatel brand dates from 1917. If and why indeed the name of VATEL® has been chosen for the Portuguese salt products sold under this brand, will probably remain an unsolved mystery.

It is no secret, though, that VATEL® table salt products are very popular in Portugal and well established in the market today.
